I need to use data from three files having same layout.
can i append the data from all these sources at the time of allocation itself?
If yes, please let me know of the syntax or any link where i can find it.

Eg:
I have three datasets viz. ABC1, ABC2 and ABC3. Layout and format is same for all these three files.

I want to use a single DYNAM ALLOC to get the data from all these three files.
How can I achieve this?

Thanks!

Have your researched DYNAM ALLOC ?

You will probably need to DYNAM ALLOC each one, then DYNAM CONCAT them together.

Not sure if the same applies now-a-days (it's been a while since I used MVS, Z/OS etc.) but DYNAM ALLOC could only allocate a DSN when it had not been allocated previously. If it had then you need to free it first.

Also, there did appear to be a difference between DYNAM ALLOC etc. and TSO ALLOC etc. Such as DYNAM FREE did not work against a file that was DD'd where as TSO FREE would.

Just be aware of these differences as they may help you progress when you think you are stuck.

Prash,

The answer to your question depends upon the format of your 3 files.
Are they sequential files?
Focus files?
Other?

Waz,
I don't want DYNAM ALLOCating each file as they have exactly the same layout. I want to use the same master layout. If I allocate each file separately, then I will have to use different masters which I don't want.

Danny,
All the three files are sequential files.

Tony,
Thanks for the tips!

Like Waz suggested, you DYNAM ALLOC each file individually and then use DYNAM CONCAT to concatenate them as one file. One of the DYNAM ALLOC file's DDNAME should be the Master you want to use in your report. Something like this:

DYNAM ALLOC DDNAME SALES DSNAME SALES.YEAR1 SHR
DYNAM ALLOC DDNAME SALES2 DSNAME SALES.YEAR2 SHR
DYNAM ALLOC DDNAME SALES3 DSNAME SALES.YEAR3 SHR

DYNAM CONCAT DDNAME SALES SALES2 SALES3

TABLE FILES SALES
...

Thanks Francis & Waz,
It works!
I was thinking that we need to specify a master for every DDNAME which is not the case.

Although you can allocate multiple files to a DDNAME in JCL, the DYNAM command doesn't allow for this, and I don't think that the TSO ALLOC command does either.

So the simple solution is to use CONCAT
