I have a HTML with a google map, locations being selected from a fex. Map displays the selected location correctly but the map marker is missing. Specified a png marker image in the map properties dialog "Selected Marker Image".

Per our technicals: "Showing and Hiding Marker Visibility in the Google Map" was a new feature added in 769. Since you stated that you are on Dev Studio 767 and WF 714, a case might be the best way to go to figure out what the issue is.
