[CLOSED] Custom Time Dimension: Possible to do daily?
Hi Team,

I see in the PMF manual(page 285, version 522) that Weekly is the lowest level possible for a custom time dimension. I implemented a weekly time dimension for a client in the past, so I'm familiar with how this works. My question today is: Can I do a daily custom time dimension?

I believe I could map a four level time dimension that includes Day as the lowest value. I wonder why that won't work, but week will work?

Please let me know.

Cheers,

Joey

The reason we say it goes down to week is that nobody plans targets at the daily level. It's just not done out there in the real world. If your situation seems to call for day-level metrics, I'd recommend you re-inspect the assumptions you're making about what your client needs. If they are simply looking for day level drill detail, that means the day level data would most probably be in the drill out, not in the PMF data mart. If you compare the volumes over weekly for example you'll have 7 times as much data - almost an order of magnitude. If you're comparing it to monthly you'd have 30 times as much data.

That being said, with custom time, any frequency is possible and Time goes up to five levels.

Note that the data volumes with daily metrics would be quite large - if you had a normal amount of dimensional cardinality, you'd in most cases be dealing with hundreds of millions of rows of metric data. To ensure reasonably good real-time performance you'd need to implement the performance recommendations in the PMF Installation and Configuration Guide, right away.

thanks

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the quick reply.

I understand well what you are saying, from a technical and a strategic perspective.

I know that the vast majority of measures would be aggregated at a monthly level, and one or two operational ones might be brought in at a daily level. It seems to me that there would be no need to keep too much history for these daily Measures, perhaps a few months rolling.

We've implemented materialized views and they have made a huge difference for speed. This concept is in my toolbox now, right near the top.

Cheers,

Joey
