Controlling Data Text Display on a Scatter Graph

I'm running into a problem with controlling the data text display with a SCATTERS Graph.
For example:

GRAPH FILE CAR
SUM SALES
ACROSS DC
BY COUNTRY
IF CAR EQ 'TOYOTA' OR 'AUDI'

ON GRAPH SET GRMERGE ON
ON GRAPH SET LOOKGRAPH VBAR
ON GRAPH SET GRAPHEDIT SERVER
ON GRAPH SET BARNUMB OFF
ON GRAPH SET 3D OFF
ON GRAPH SET VZERO OFF
ON GRAPH SET GRID OFF

ON GRAPH SET GRAPHSTYLE *

setLegendDisplay(false);

setDataTextDisplay(true);
setDisplay(getDataText(1), false);
ENDSTYLE
END


Running the above focexec will produce a VBAR graph with data text just above one series. However if I change the graph type to SCATTERS, there is data text displayed on every data point. I have found that if I change the across field to AlphaNumeric, I can control the data text display for a SCATTERS graph; but when the across field is Numeric, the "setDisplay" command does not seem to work.
Any suggestions?
