We need to upgrade to 7 to take advantage of some features and we are also going to move to using Servlets through Tomcat from CGI. I'm very familiar with Tomcat but less so with WebFocus. We just have the Report Server that I've installed succesfully twice.
The local shop wants to bill us for 3 days work. Either that's way too much, or there's more to the upgrade than might appear. I'm willing to pay someone to do the upgrade if it makes sense but I don't want to blindly agree to something without a second opinion.
So any opinions on the difficulty of this upgrade?
Upgrading WebFOCUS 5.3 to 7.1 shouldn't be difficult, dependeing what client wants. In my case, the upgrade was during a whole month ( 3 WebFOCUS on 3 platforms ), so each WebFOCUS was installed in about 7 laborable days :P Including testing correspondent aplications, and several experiments....
In my personal case, in my house, was installed 5.3 to 7.1 and in a total of 3 hr 10 min everything was running, including both server and client, developer studio, w/Oracle 10g...
Dunno know if this is gonna help you... 3 days mus be ok I think.

i strongly suggest that you test your entire 53 app on a test box, where 71 is installed. i would recommend that you install it yourself, test your apps; once you've edited your fexes to accomodate any code changes,(which might take 10 minutes or 10 days..dunno..but only you can do the work) then you can let ibi come in and do the production upgrade , migrating all the caster libs, and all the end-user mre domains, and getting the security right, and all the stuff you absolutely cannot screw up. they flat know how to do that, bulletproof. worth every penny.

Yep, almost always I forget these configurations.... sussanah is right, installing the product is easy enough, configurating properly not an easy task... you can call IB support for this creepy configuration, both security and caster and MRE as well.

Thanks for the advice. We don't use Report Caster, MRE, or even have ANY security set up (the server gives full control rights to everyone!!).
We're using WebFocus as the reporting tool for a much larger project and no one has really been in charge of it until recently. I think they told the originally IBI installer to get it to work and that was it. I thought it might be easier to get the upgrade in place before tackling the other issues (security, development environment, source control).
I did the upgrade on development and it was quite challenging. IBI tech support helped with a couple of issues. Do any of you guys have a Project Plan for migration? I am working on one for production upgrade but want to know more on issues faced etc. Regards Arun
