Not too sure whether you can control that or not. It might be worth contacting support to find out more. It may even have to be a new feature request.
My concern would be more along the lines of "If you have 7 or 8 files in your reporting object then is the retrieval path efficient?". This, of course, depends upon the types of DB / File. However, if they are SQL based, then I would be inclined to create a view within SQL rather than let end users loose on a possibly complex join structure.
Just my five pence worth!

Where are you seeing these colours? I've just created an RO with 7 levels of CAR file joined by successive COUNTRY fields and then opened it in both Applet and HTML RA. I don't see the colours that you are mentioning?

What colors are you seeing? I have one reporting object with 6 joins and the colors used are black, purple , red, blue ( legible), and green, yellow(not legible). My signature was wrong, I'm still in 7.1.1 (release 123) for this which may be the difference. I contacted the help desk and they said there is a hotfix fox this problem but it's only available for 7.1.3 and 7.1.4.

I'm unaware of any way to change the colors when you show the tree structure of the joins rather than the field list. And I agree the yellow is 'un-readable' if you mouse over you can see what is there but that's about all.
