What I don't understand is, I changed all the column sizes within the report? As you can see the fields are way too long for the data they contain, most fields can be about 50.

I would suggest using a COMPUTE or DEFINE to change the size of the fields.

With a HOLD, the redefined formats are not kept.

It isn't that your fields are too small, they are too large. This means you have more than 32K in one record.

Am, here is an example for you to follow. remember to not use the V in the format and it will work. I created a dummy field called anvln equal to lastname and made it A50V. This changed the format on the fly to A5. This is the code and output.

SET HOLDLIST =PRINTONLY
TABLE FILE EMPDATA
PRINT PIN COMPUTE ANVLN/A50V=LN; NOPRINT
ANVLN/A5
ON TABLE HOLD
END
?FF HOLD

FILENAME= HOLD
PIN E01 A9
ANVLN E02 A5
