I am creating a hold file, FILEDEF ing using temppath to get the path name and getiing a server error.

I ran this from edastart and got this error 'c0000005 access violation '.

Does any one have any ideas?

Can you post the filedef?

Execute that section of code, sandwiching it between

-RUN
-SET &STACK=OFF;
-SET &ECHO=ALL;

and

-EXIT

to see what's happening without abending.

How did you run anything from edastart? That is a routine to restart the server.

Pat, he probably ran it from edastart -t which is a great debugging tool.

Have you looked at your TEMPPATH result?
TEMPPATH can put alot of blank spaces after the pathname, [unless you already know exactly how long the path will be,] and a hard concat doesn't get rid of them. You have to skqoosh it down with some more editing before you can append a filename to it.
ARGLEN, and the SUBSTR are what i use.
That might be your prob..

And where does this alternate master come in that you're talking about in the title of this post?
As the previous comments all suggest, please post the complete code that is causing the problem. We're now looking at perhaps the wrong piece of code....
