You don't even need DATECVT - but this is a VERY basic question that has many easy to find examples. DATE1/A8YYMD=DATE;
Then if you need straight smart date (for further calculation as opposed to a display only)
DATE2/YYMD=DATE1;

Anyway, I think it has been said already many times before, there is this wondeful little booklet that deals with any and all thing that have to do with date issues.
