The problem that I have is that if I create a report with a variable and save the output as AHTML, I have a problem later in saving it after it is displayed as an active report on the screen.
It looks OK on the screen, but when I use the File Save option on my browser it saves the prompt html screen not the report.

Any ideas

We are getting heavily into AHTML. In case the problem is still out there I recommend saving as Web page - HTML only. At least that worked for us.
