We have some problems with fields being different types in our databases. But I really need to join a table that has a store number as a P4 and the other table has store number as an A4V. What are my options?

I think you have two options.

1) Create a dbms view that contains your field converted to alpha, then create a Master for that view and use it instead of the table
2) use a DEFINE-based JOIN - this option is not efficient as it will not be translated to SQL.
