I have three chained select boxes, each with the 'Add "ALL" option' checked. I also have 'Sort' checked with 'Sort by' set to 'Display'.
When I select "All" in the first select box, I am expecting the second and third to be sorted in alphabetical order with "All" at the top. "All" is at the top, but the values are not sorted alphabetically - they are sorted alphabetically but only within each value of the first select box, so I will have Aa Ba Ca Ab Cb Bc Dc... instead of Aa Ab Ba Bc Ca Cb Dc...
Do I expect too much?

Guru I don't have this issue with the car file, are you using an embedded or external procedure?

Expert I use an external procedure that feeds all three select boxes.

Guru You wouldn't happen to group by or do anything different in those external procedures by chance? I don't think I have had this problem before. (the code would be nice to see)

Expert There are BY statements in the external procedure which obviously orders the rows a certain way, but why is there sorting options on each of the chained controls if they cannot resort the data supplied by the external procedure?
BY CHAIN_COLUMN1
BY CHAIN_COLUMN2
BY CHAIN_COLUMN3

Virtuoso I think those sort options are usually used with embedded procedures (as opposed to external ones), where you're not allowed to decide on the sort order of the output of the procedure yourself.
With an external procedure, you are in control, in which case it doesn't make so much sense to sort the results again. Besides, that approach to sorting sorts on the (slow) client side using javascript instead of on a (fast) database server.
To summarise; I think it's reasonable to expect the results of an external procedure to be sorted correctly.
Of course that leaves the question why those options are available for external procedures, but the same goes for several other elements in that toolbox window. For example, you can modify the TABLE request of an embedded procedure, which causes it to stop working... That particular bit of interface is not very well thought out (which is something IBI said, not me).

Guru Again I was unable to reproduce your issue. Two controls with the last one having
BY CHAIN_COLUMN1
BY CHAIN_COLUMN2
Everything still works out. The second listbox is an external procedure here is the code:
TABLE FILE CAR
BY CAR.ORIGIN.COUNTRY
BY CAR.COMP.CAR
ON TABLE SET PAGE-NUM NOLEAD
ON TABLE NOTOTAL
ON TABLE PCHOLD FORMAT XML
ON TABLE SET HTMLCSS ON
ON TABLE SET STYLE *

$
ENDSTYLE

Expert Well, I've got it working with the CAR file, I'll debug my real code this morning...
external fex - fm_chain1_data.fex:
SET HOLDLIST=PRINTONLY
TABLE FILE CAR
SUM
COUNTRY NOPRINT
BY COUNTRY
BY CAR
ON TABLE PCHOLD FORMAT XML
END
HTML page - fm_chain1.htm

Guru I thought you said you had already done that in your original post. Which control was throwing you off (first, second, third, or all three?)
