APP FILEDEF MASTER DISK IFS/IF1355_ALLITEMS&SUFFIX|.MAS ( APPEND

Want to use a suffix for testing and then return to normal for normal use.

-SET &SUFFIX = '' ;

Results in 

APP FILEDEF MASTER DISK IFS/IF1355_ALLITEMS MAS ( APPEND
 -RUN
 (FOC358) ERROR ISSUING FILEDEF COMMAND FOR: FILEDEF MASTER DISK

ie shortest string is length 1

There's ways round but all of them messy. Anyone know why the null string can't exist in dm?

The original implementation had an eight-bit unsigned binary number to hold the length, and allowed the content length to be up to 256. Since there were only 256 possible length values, the minimum was 1.

The limit was since raised (32k now?), but the behavior of treating ='' as =' ' remains for backward compatibility.

By using -SET, you can take advantage of hard catenation to squelch the blank. 
-SET &disk = 'IFS/IF1355_ALLITEMS' | &SUFFIX || '.MAS';
APP FILEDEF MASTER DISK &disk ( APPEND


(Actually, || doesn't eliminate the trailing blanks on the left operand, it just pushes them to the tail end of the resulting string -- which is good enough for your purposes).
