its the browser bringing together all extra spaces to one single space. that's just what browsers do.
the non-breaking space that a browser will honor is & n b s p ; (spaces added here to prevent this browser from evaluating )

you can try replacing the spaces with &|nbsp;
you can use STRREP function

Sorry i forgot to mention that the output file is excel 2000

Can it still be affected by the browser?

Thank you.

Here is an exemple ( * represent spaces )

This is what is in DBase
1XF*A135****50Y/RL White
1XF*A135****50Y/RL Blue
2HP2*X50*HM*100M/RL Red
2HP2*X50****50M/RL Blue

WF output in XL give
1XF*A135*50Y/RL White
1XF*A135*50Y/RL Blue
2HP2*X50*HM*100M/RL Red
2HP2*X50*50M/RL Blue

I need to be able to remove what is after the last * to be able subtotal sales by what is before length in roll

Is this a database field that contains the string or is this a compute or define? If it's a compute or define please show us the formula for it. What happens if you run the same report with FORMAT PDF or FORMAT WP? Do the spaces show?

The field is a text field

Actualy the function (edit 9999999999$$$$$$$$$$)
did the job as the function is done in the dbase where the spaces are but thank you all very much for your reply
