When I try to assign a YYMD value to a MDYY formatted variable I get an error that they are incompatible.
If internally they are stored the same, why does it throw an error?

Richard,

I agree. It should be possible, but have you tried using DATECVT? Have not tried it myself, but just an idea.

I realize this is simplistic, but I don't get an error:

MAINTAIN
COMPUTE DATE1/YYMD='20110805';
COMPUTE DATE2/MDYY = DATE1;
TYPE "<< DATE1 << DATE2"
END

Please let me know if this gives you an error. If you CAN give me a small repro of your issue?
Thanks
Mark
