Help needed with DEFAULT_CONNECTION

I have several database connections defined with the mySQL adapter. I use an amper variable to set the connection based on a value on a page, using code like this:

ENGINE MYSQL SET DEFAULT_CONNECTION &DBNAME


This works as expected, except for one case - if the variable name contains a value that is not one of the existing connection names, the DEFAULT_CONNECTION setting defaults to the first existing connection name. I definitely don't want this - I would rather set the DEFAULT_CONNECTION to blank or something. Any ideas on how I can achieve this?

A couple of options, perhaps....

1. Set the first connection to a dummy.
2. Read the edasprof and extract the actual names, and validate the supplied name.

Yes, read through the edasprof, but I have a vague memory that you can get a list of connections another way.
