I have a erquirement to have a subhead text element, in excel output, to be positioned over columns 5 and 6 with a second text element over columns 7 and 8.

                     SUBHEAD ele1    SUBHEAD ele2
                    column5 column6 column7 column8
col1 col2 col3 col4  title   title   title   title  column9 column10

Essentially the two subhead elements are above the column titles with the first spanning cols 5 and 6 and the second spanning clos 7 and 8. Anyone have any ideas on how I can accomplish this?

Thank you.

This can only be achieved by using HEADING and HEADALIGN=BODY and COLSPAN.

Basically, you don't use column titles (by using AS '') and then design the column titles in the HEADING block.

Something like this:

SET PAGE = NOLEAD
SET HTMLCSS = ON
-RUN

DEFINE FILE CAR
DUMMY1/A1 = '';
END

TABLE FILE CAR
SUM
DEALER_COST AS ''
RETAIL_COST AS ''
SALES AS ''
WEIGHT AS ''
HEIGHT AS ''
LENGTH AS ''

BY DUMMY1 NOPRINT
BY COUNTRY AS ''

ON DUMMY1 SUBHEAD
" <+0>Dollars<+0>Dimensions"
"COUNTRY<+0>DEALER_COST<+0>RETAIL_COST<+0>SALES<+0>WEIGHT<+0>HEIGHT<+0>LENGTH"

HEADING
"TEST REPORT"
" "

ON TABLE PCHOLD FORMAT EXL2K

ON TABLE SET STYLE *
TYPE=REPORT, FONT=ARIAL, SIZE=9,  $

TYPE=HEADING, STYLE=BOLD, $

TYPE=SUBHEAD, HEADALIGN=BODY, STYLE=BOLD, $
TYPE=SUBHEAD, LINE=1, ITEM=2, COLSPAN=2, JUSTIFY=CENTER, COLOR=BLUE,  $
TYPE=SUBHEAD, LINE=1, ITEM=3, COLSPAN=4, JUSTIFY=CENTER, COLOR=RED, $

TYPE=TITLE, STYLE=BOLD, BACKCOLOR=RGB(204 255 204), $
ENDSTYLE
END
-RUN
