Impact Analysis - can i find a variable extant in a join?

Impact Analysis seems to work ONLY if both the FILENAME and the FIELDNAME are in the same fex..
but what about a FIELDNAME that becomes extant via a JOIN ? and never gets mentioned in the same breath as its owner filename ... ?
Is it possible? or a NFR?
thoughts?
