Moving columns closer together

I have a 2 column report with some long heading lines that cannot be shortened or split into multiple lines. As a result, the 2 columns are spread far apart. How can I get these columns to appear closer together, and centered under the heading. The focexec below illustrates the situation.

Look up HEADALIGN and COLSPAN in your doc.
