Swapna,

1. Do you mean that the files are disjointed: have nothing in common? Or, do you want then to be joined within the master file?
2. You say "tables". Are these SQL tables?

these are oracle tables and they do not have common fields....
i need not join those tables...
without joining is it possible to create a single master field....

Why do you need a single master when there is no logical relationship between the tables, it makes no sense at all.

Swapna,

If you have to keep the original Oracle tables, I don't know of a method. However, if you don't mind loading the data into a FOCUS file, then, it is possible. However, these will be unrelated segments, so don't try to sort data of one table by a field in the other...

JG,

Remember in the old days there used to be sequential files with unrelated data so a DUMMY segment was put into use.

Possibly, they want to have one MASTER to present to some users who can then decide to report, say, on the employees OR on the purchase orders.

I agree that it is abit strange...

There is only one way to have two tables defined in one master file, and that is if the two tables are linked by some common field. If they do not have at least one field in common, you can't put both tables in one master file.
In short: you have to be able to join them in order to create one mfd for them.

Gerard,

This is true for SQL tables. A hierarchy MUST be defined.

However, if it is an absolute necessity to have ONE master for TWO or more independant tables you can load them into a FOCUS file:

FILENAME=SWAPNA, SUFFIX=FOC
SEGNAME=DUM, SEGTYPE=S1
 FIELDNAME=DUM, ALIAS=DUM, USAGE=A1, $
SEGNAME=TABLE1, SEGTYPE=ss, PARENT=DUM
 FIELDNAME=....
 ....
SEGNAME=TABLE2, SEGTYPE=ss, PARENT=DUM
 FIELDNAME=....
 ....

And you load the data from the original tables. A bit strange, but it will work.
