Hello Dave,
I am sorry that you were offended by the announcement of the WebFOCUS Keysheet and (almost) 1001 Ways to Work with Dates in WebFocus technical reference books available to the WebFOCUS and Focus community.
I have been a Focus and WebFOCUS programmer since 1982 and John Price, the author of the books, has been programming since the 1970’s.
John had created the Focus Keysheet so that he could find commands and cross references to the various operating systems very quickly.
As soon as I saw it with all of its attention to detail, it was obvious that everyone needed this product for the Focus language. I was so excited about this tech reference breakthrough that I decided to immediately publish it so that everyone who has been working with Focus would benefit from this great manual.
And then Gerry Cohen was so impressed with the Focus Keysheet that he asked us to develop a parallel product for WebFOCUS.
We have spent literally thousands of hours putting the documents together over the past 2 decades – and they in fact contain the whole of the Focus and WebFOCUS languages on multiple platforms.
The technical reference books were created because there was a need to keep track of all these commands. This information was never available in one easy to use convenient place until we created it. These technical reference books provide the only complete compendium of this information.
The entire support staff at IBI relies on the Keysheets in their daily work. In addition consultants and programmers worldwide in the Focus and WebFOCUS communities use these reference books to increase their efficiency on a daily basis.
The Keysheets and Dates books have been very much collaborative efforts with members of the Focus/WebFOCUS community contributing to them.
The (almost) 1001 Ways to Work with Dates in WebFOCUS came about because of the great amount of frustration that we were facing when confronted with the Y2K conversions. This handy reference will help you solve all of those painstaking but necessary date problems.
There are very few avenues available to make the news known that these books are online and available to the community. No, they are not free just as WebFOCUS and Focus software are not free. But these are a great help to anyone who is programming. We are a small dedicated group of Focus and WebFOCUS programmers who have been living and breathing this code for decades.
Everyone who has seen the breadth and depth of the technical reference materials know they are invaluable. We are hoping to share the information that we have gleaned over the years with other programmers. Given the size of the language, it is extremely helpful to have this enormous amount of information at your fingertips.
These tech reference ebooks are ongoing and completely updated versions. If you look at the history link on our website you will see how many versions the Keyhseets have been through. We are constantly updating these books to keep up with IBI’s releases.
Everyone who has ever purchased these materials immediately realizes what invaluable products they are. From novice to expert there is so much information contained in these technical reference books that you will be blown away.
This is an ongoing project and we have been keeping the flame going and intend to keep it going.
We are a small group of programmers who has dedicated ourselves to this project. We love the power of the WebFOCUS and Focus languages and we wanted a way to work with maximum efficiency.
No one can possibly remember all the commands available. This is having a personal dictionary specialized in WebFOCUS at your fingertips.
Ten years ago the books were selling for $90.00. Many programmers who were using the Keysheets and Dates book repeatedly asked for an online version. Not content to keep the reference materials in their old form and in response to these requests, we have completely reworked all of these technical reference books to bring them online, color coded, and hyperlinked.
Searching for any command is so much easier now. We want everyone to know the full power of WebFOCUS.
Take a look.
Thanks for reading this to the end. I hope to convey some appreciation for the amount of time and effort we have spent completing this daunting task.
We wish everyone in the community a wonderful, happy and healthy New Year.
Regards,
