If you are doing a selection you can

WHERE XYZ CONTAINS 'ABC'

POSIT will find the starting postion of a string in a string, returns '0' if not present.

Susannah is right and it is the most efficient. You can also use CONTAINS in DM:
-SET &TEST=IF &F1 CONTAINS &F2 THEN 1 ELSE 0;

Thanks for all your suggestions. Unfortunately I ended up doing a rewrite to work around the problem!
