I am trying to create a field with month and year in the following format:
JAN-2008
I can get the month and year as separate fields, but when I try to concatenate them, the month turns into a numeric field (01-2008).
Here is how I am formatting it (DISB_DT is a database field containing month, day, and year):

DATEX/MT = DISB_DT;
DATEY/YY = DISB_DT;
DATEZ/A8 = EDIT(DATEX)||'-'||EDIT(DATEY);

Any ideas on how to preseve the abbreviated month field?

For many of this type of formatting I find DATETRAN works well:
DEFINE FILE CAR
DATE1/MYY = 012008;
DATE2/A8 = DATETRAN(DATE1,'(MYY)','(-T)','EN',8,'A8');
END
TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT COUNTRY DATE1 DATE2
END

Thanks so much for this suggestion. It worked well.
I had also found another solution (though not so graceful) just before reading your response:
DATEX/MT = DISB_DT;
DATEY/YY = DISB_DT;
DATEZ/A8 = EDIT(DATEX)||'-'||EDIT(DATEY);
DATEXX/A3 = CHGDAT('MT','MT',DATEZ,DATEXX);
COMBO/A8 = DATEXX||'-'||EDIT(DATEY);

I think I'll go with your solution.
