How to improve performance of our WF Report.Is that right to use more number of HOLD files in our fex.

Use of HOLD file is very subjective.

Performance issues should be tracked down to a TABLE FILE and then the code/Generated SQL (If applicable) needs to be analysed.

Are there joins in place ?
Are they efficient (Joining on Keys or Indexes)

If you are using an SQL data source, you can use HOLD FORMAT SAMEDB to not transfer the data to WebFOCUS, but keep the data in the SQL data source.

Performance can also be related to the RDBMS being used and its optimization.

There really is no 'pat' answer as WAZ says it all 'depends' on what you are doing.

If you can avoid 'too' many HOLD files that is always optimal.

Review your FILTERS - a filter against a Defined field will take longer depending on the number of records being retrieved.

If you have access to the code you can run SQL Traces to see the WebFOCUS generated SQL code.

For us, there is little need for real time access. So we build extracts and store the data in FOCUS or XFOCUS files. Depending on the application, this data is refreshed every few hours to once a week. Most of our stuff is Self-Service or Guided Ad-hoc and it usually takes less than a couple of seconds to run a report. In fact, depending on the report and how much data has been requested, the bottle neck is downloading and displaying the report, the actual code generally runs in less than a second. Depending on your need, you may want to investigate using extracts.


In FOCUS since 1985. Prod WF 8.0.08 (z90/Suse Linux) DB (Oracle 11g), Self Serv, Report Caster, WebServer Intel/Linux.
