Is there really much of a difference between:

a computed "stack of X" type stack like

 compute Stack1 / stack of A0;

and a computed stack with 1 column in it:

 compute Stack2.firstColumn / A0;

It seens that Stack2 is more "visible" than Stack1. I have been using a lot of "stack of" type stacks when dealing with form elements like comboboxes, tables, etc.

If it's possible to just create a computed stack with 1 column, is there a specific reason for "stack of" type stacks? Is one suited for certain things better than the other.

I was just curious since I'm using a lot of stacks in my current Maintain project. The manuals don't really talk about creating computed stacks with columns vs. "stack of X" stacks.

Thanks,
James

When it comes right down to it, there is only one kind of stack. However there are a couple of ways to create it. The syntax: COMPUTE STK / STACK OF A0 was our attempt to make the syntax more object oriented. Here are the details...

A stack can contains database fields:

Infer fields into Stack

Computed fields:

Compute stk.field/fmt;

Or any combination of the two.

You can also have a stack that contains HTML as the output from a Table with ON TABLE PCHOLD FORMAT HTML:

Compute STK.HTML/A200;

Finally, there is a stack that contains output messages from an EXEC'd procedure, and that's FOCMSG.MSG and you don't have to compute or INFER that. I hope this helps.
