My desire is to use the result of the code below to pass a date parameter to a SQL statement provided by a third party

my code is

-SET &ECHO=ALL;
SET ASNAMES = ON
TABLE FILE AGBGIFT
SUM
AGBGIFT.AGBGIFT.AGBGIFT_GIFT_DATE/DMtYY AS 'DATE1'
COMPUTE LY_GIFT_DATE/DMtYY = DATEADD(AGBGIFT.AGBGIFT.AGBGIFT_GIFT_DATE, 'Y', -1); AS 'DATE2'
BY HIGHEST 1 AGBGIFT.AGBGIFT.AGBGIFT_GIFT_DATE NOPRINT
ON TABLE SET PAGE-NUM NOLEAD
ON TABLE NOTOTAL
ON TABLE HOLD AS HOLD_YR FORMAT ALPHA
END
-*
-*
-*
-RUN
-READ HOLD_YR &DATE1.A11. &DATE2.A11.

the result that is being passed is '20160217170' what i need is '17 feb 2016'

why is the date being changed back from DMtYY to yymd ? and how can i control that so it does not

thanks

Try &DATEDtMYY.
-SET &NEW_DATE =  STRREP(&DATEDtMYY.LENGTH,&DATEDtMYY,1  ,',',1,'',&DATEDtMYY.LENGTH,'A&DATEDtMYY.LENGTH');

When I try &DATEDtMYY I get "18 Feb, 2016". Close, but there is a comma in there.

That works. I missed it the first time you posted it.

If you convert that date to a HDATE (using HDTTM), then you can create a string value using HCNVRT and store that in your ALPHA file.

BY HIGHEST 1 AGBGIFT.AGBGIFT.AGBGIFT_GIFT_DATE NOPRINT
ON TABLE SET PAGE-NUM NOLEAD
ON TABLE NOTOTAL
ON TABLE SET HOLDLIST PRINTONLY
ON TABLE HOLD AS HOLD_YR FORMAT ALPHA
-*IF READLIMIT EQ 5
END
-RUN
-*
-READ HOLD_YR &DATE1.A8. &MONTH1.A2. &DATE2.A8.
-SET &MONTH1X = DECODE &MONTH1('01' 'JAN' '02' 'FEB' '03' 'MAR' '04' 'APR' '05' 'MAY' '06' 'JUN' '07' 'JUL' '08' 'AUG' '09' 'SEP' '10' 'OCT' '11' 'NOV' '12' 'DEC' );
-SET &DATE1X = EDIT(&DATE1,'99-$$$$$$')|'&MONTH1X'|EDIT(&DATE1,'$$$$-9999');
