Now the request is changed and they want the italian cars shown like this. I feel as if I am mixing apples and oranges - how do I get the total correct without the italian cars counted twice

Try using a subfoot.

Can I make the subfoot show only when country is italy?

Yea just have the subfoot look like this

ON COUNTRY SUBFOOT 
"BLAH BLAH BLAH"
WHEN COUNTRY EQ 'ITALY';

(The WHEN can even done the graphical report builder - I could not find it - I was expecting it within the subfoot options but is it there when you right click the subfooting)
