1. Is there a way to get the 'Total' label on the same line as the totals even though there are no BY's?
2. Assuming the answer to the first question is 'no', is there way to tell the 'Total' label line to span a few columns? I couldn't seem to find a way to address this line.

if you will do a search on TOTAL SAME LINE. you will get many answers on that question. You can try this ON TABLE SUBFOOT
ON TABLE SUBFOOT
"TOTAL <ST.WEIGHT"
but look at some of the answers

You've hit on two weaknesses of the code. Both have been discussed here quite a bit.
1. Someone may find a solution involving a dummy column - I can't seem to get it to work. 2. There appears to be no styling tag for the "Total" text portion of a subtotal or column total.

Nice idea. However, then I get the extra blank column on top - I'm not sure which I'd prefer (though considering the border problems you have with grandtotal on two rows this just may be a better way).
