I use the EDIT function a lot to truncate long fields so the data will fit on a report. So, for example, I would like the first 5 characters of a 45-character field. But I really dont want to be bothered typing $ 40 times ...
It seems to me that I saw something like this recently, but it doesn't work for me, so I'm hoping someone will supply the correct syntax ...
DEFINE FILE BLAHBLAH
SHORTFIELD/A5 = EDIT(LONGFIELD, '9999$*')
END
.. and while we are at it, any other neat tricks with EDIT - and yes, I know I could use SUBSTR, but I am a dinosaur ....
