I was recently upgraded to a later release of UltraEdit(15.20). Prior to this upgrade if I right clicked a focexec while in Dev Studio the first option was "Edit in UltraEdit" and the fex would open in UltraEdit. After the upgrade this no longer works. I swithed to use Notepad(Window, Options... , External Tools) and that works. I then switched back to UltraEdit but it doen't work. When I right click and select "Edit in UltraEdit" nothing works.

Try associating a file with a fex extension to UltraEdit.
- Right-click on windows desktop or in a folder and choose 'New > Text file' - Rename the new file to 'something.fex' - Right-click this file and choose 'open with' - from the pope up, choose to list the programs to open it with. - Find Ultraedit, select it, and tick the 'always use this program' box. - close ultraedit - go back to Dev Studio and try it again (you may have to restart it). - Lastly, switch to TextPad because it's clearly better. ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)
There is an option in EditPlus for the specified file type: "Associate in Explorer". I have that checked for fex, mas, acx, etc.
If this option is available in UltraEdit, give that a try - I believe it sets the file type "Opens with" option in Windows (as previously described) but maybe it does a little more...

Give me code, or give me retirement. In FOCUS since 1991

Try editing the option in Dev Studio. Turn it off, Save and turn it back on. (that is, reset it to 'Edit in Text Editor', save, close, open, then set it to 'Edit in Windows registered tool').
I'm kind of in uncharted territory, this is just a guess. I know sometimes these things are not as dynamic as you'd think.
Thanks for everyone's help with this issue. Unfortunately the issue persists. A case has been opened and hopefully I will have a "Live Meeting" with IBI and resolve the problem.
I have reset the "Default file editor" from "Edit in Windows registered tool" to "Edit in Text Editor" and back multiple times.
I have also set the "File Associations" in UltraEdit for .FEX, .MAS & .ACX.
Thanks, Ted

Indeed, I also seem to remember from the past that it just plainly refused to do the edit in some other editor than the standard devstudio text editor. But with the newer releases it all does work fine. I'm currently using UltraEdit within DevStudio for fex, mas and acx files, and it works like a charm. I'm using 77.01. UltraEdit is even mentioned in DevStudio's context menu...

It seems TedB has asked this before???
I did post this problem earlier (January 2008) and I did get UltraEdit to work as the default editor in Dev Studio. But when UltraEdit was recently upgraded to a later version it no longer works as the default editor.

I think that Gold Member Boogarweed did interesting things to marry UltraEdit and Focexecs. ("ULTRAEDIT IBI FOCEXEC" as a Goggle question gets you into the Past of this Forum). It sounds interesting to me, but Time, as often, seem to have spoilt the idea. Does anyone have recent informations around UltraEdit and Focus ? This rather Basic Level might help me understand who is doing what in this Three legged Duck's world (beloved Duck anyhow) Focusely and Farmely

Since I still have a old version(v7.1) of Dev Studio on my PC, I thought I would see if UltraEdit would work as the default editor in version 7.1. In order to switch between versions 7.6 and 7.1, you have to execute "thisfoci.bat" from the "bin" directory of the version you want to run. I was able to get UltraEdit to work in v7.1. Then I ran the appropriate bat file for v7.6 and when I started Dev Studio v7.6 I was able to use UltraEdit as the default editor.
