Don, IBM COMP-3 fields are packed, 2 digits per byte + another half byte for the sign. V indicates the position of the virtual decimal point. In your examples you have SV9(5), meaning 5 digits and a sign = 6 half bytes = 3 bytes. In FOCUS you would code this: USAGE=P7.5, ACTUAL=P3, $ ACTUAL=P3 => 3 bytes packed USAGE=P7.5 => 7 digits including the decimal point with 5 digits after the decimal point
