I've been asked to provide data to our state government (for reporting purposes) as an xml format file
Could someone suggest a starting point or maybe give me a brief outline on the steps to creating an XML output file?
I could dump this to a text file and hard-code the tags, but it looks like WebFocus should be able to do this without all that extra work.
any hints would be appreciated

Guru While HOLD FORMAT XML doese create an XML document it is a representation of a REPORT and that may not be what you want.
You can create a synonym for an XML structure using (in order of preference) an XSD (XML Schema Definition), DTD or a sample XML document.
Then with DataMigrator you can map to the pre-defined XML structure.

Expert You can produce this format XML document, but it will not be easy.
I have in the past created something similar.
The concept is to build the XML part by part.
For example:
FILEDEF a collection file (Append). -WRITE any headers, non repetative DEFINE/TABLE COMPUTE a string that contains a logical row, like the PersonalCore tag. SAVE to the collection file. Process the next logical row. Make sure any other tags are added at the right time. The actual layout, new lines, etc, are not that important, but if it is needed, then these can be added during the process.
There may be other ways to do this. Perhaps even calling an external function.

Guru Here's a sample of the synonym that you can automatically create from the Data Management Console from the XSD.
With DataMigrator you can use the synonym as a target and create transformations to map to it like any other target type.

I think I'm going to take Waz's advice for this project. That strategy was the first thought I had, I just wanted to be sure there wasn't a way to 'automagically' map the data we pull off to the format of the template.

Virtuoso I haven't looked closely at your XML and schema files, but you can probably create an XML file containing the data you need (using HOLD FORMAT XML) and transform that into the appropriate format using XSLT.
I haven't done any of the kind in WebFOCUS, but it's possible to write a simple servlet on the application server that you call with a few parameters. That servlet in turn calls a fex to retrieve the XML data (as described above) and combines that with the XSLT sheet into the format you need.
Generating the correct format directly is probably more efficient, but it will probably be cumbersome and inflexible.
