I just want Dev-Studio to return the MAX date and don't understand why the MAX function requires two fields.

What exactly is the MAX function doing with the two required fields?

MAX(field, field)

I beleive the second value is Max number you would want it to be. For a date Try HIGHEST

No, the MAX function gives which of the fields in the arguments has the maximum value. It does not compute maximum for rows. For that you want the MAX. prefix operator.
