Why does this code not work as it should?

-SET &LOOKUPVAL = 'Walk';
-TYPE BEFORE &LOOKUPVAL.LENGTH
-SET &LOOKUPVAL = UPCASE(&LOOKUPVAL.LENGTH,&LOOKUPVAL,'&LOOKUPVAL.LENGTH');
-TYPE AFTERC &LOOKUPVAL.LENGTH

-TYPE &LOOKUPVAL


So, it looks like the UPCASE function is adding 13 characters to the length of my variable? I suspect I'm going to be told that I should SUBSTR it, but this is frustrating.

Or more to the point, how should I be upcasing a DM var? I will be passing it to a WHERE statement.

The syntax requires a format for the output, not just a length:

-SET &LOOKUPVAL = UPCASE(&LOOKUPVAL.LENGTH,&LOOKUPVAL,'A&LOOKUPVAL.LENGTH');
