Do you just want to get rid of the '/'?
If so, use STRIP
  
-SET &CATEGORY = 'TRAIN/EX';
-SET &CATLEN=&CATEGORY.LENGTH;
-SET &XCATEGORY=STRIP(&CATLEN, &CATEGORY, '/', 'A&CATLEN.EVAL');
