MacBookPro running SnowLeopard.

Our users have Excel for Mac 2008 installed, but want to go to 2011 someday.

We run Safari 5.1 and use it to request download files from the WebFocus server 7.6.9. They are formatted for Excel. They are placed in the downloads folder on the Mac with an xls extension, and they would open automatically into Excel 2008, when the download is complete.

I installed Excel 2011. And still have 2008 also.
Now when i request the download, the file is placed into the downloads folder without an extension and excel does not automatically open it. If i double-click it, I get a text file with garbage in it.
But I can find it in Finder and manually open it with Excel.

If i uninstall Excel 2011 it will work fine again.

Apple says it is Excel issue.
Microsoft says it is Apple issue.
Is there a header record in the download that informs Safari what type of extension to place on the file?

Does anyone else have this issue or know what could be causing it?
