Went to London Summit where I saw Gerry speak about the future of wf.
One of the ideas peddled fairly strongly was the opinion that IB was better off as an independent free to persue its own course rather than a subsidiary beholden unto one of the majors.
But is it?
Certainly there has been a recent trend of consolidation in the BI front. IBM has come in for Cognos and SAP for BO.
Are the huge marketing budgets going to be used to do a Microsoft on the competition. Certainly, at board level, the herd instinct prevails and something that seems well backed and which has a sufficient momentum will be followed.
Has WebFOCUS been left sitting on the bench at the dance where its competitors waltz off into the night. Or is independence going to allow wonder software to be developed that will kick the majors big time.
Please note all this is in my opinion what Gerry was saying and does not represent his authorative opinion in any way.

As a Business Objects and IBI customer, I hope he was confirming IBI's independence.
Since SAP bought Business Objects, we have experienced a lower level of support, and are definitely one of the "small" fish.
I have read of similar feelings in the COGNOS camp.
IBI is a responsive company, and I believe well positioned to absorb some of the fallout from the big 3 purchases. The support is personal and efficient and the product direction seems to me on target.
