WebFocus Server ODBC Driver. Can I use it with external programs?
Hello, all!

I'm trying to find out is it possible to connect to WebFocus Server through ODBC.
I see ODBC-driver for WebFocus Server.
I suppose that I can use ODBC-access to data described in master-files from external programs.
But I can't connect using admin password.

Is it possible at all?

Thanks

PS.
I am a novice in WebFocus and documentation is huge =)
Any help or direction appreciated.

Once the ODBC driver is configured correctly, this is exactly the funtionality it provides. A couple things - first, you need to have a license on the WF server for the ODBC adapter- it is one of the available data adapters, but requires a license ($$$) to be able to use it. The id/password used must be valid on the WF server platform (assuming security is on) and can be set in the ODBC driver configuration.

Thanks, Darin

I'm trying to estimate such possibility:
We have a large bunch of reports written in various report-engines (not WebFocus)
They are working with DBMSs in a terrible way. They use ODBC.
To rewrite all reports in WF is a long process.

Is it possible to reroute all queries from DBMSs to WebFocus Server?
(Consolidation of all data request is also very appealing )

What I'm trying at this moment:
I have WebFocus Studio 7.6.1
WebFocus Server for Developer Studio in Security Mode = OFF

I can't connect to System DSN named LOOPBACK
When I trying to make new ODBC source I get "EDA ODBC Driver has added 0 Data Sources"

And I cannot find any documentation for EDA ODBC Driver Frowner

To the best of my knowledge, you cannot establish an ODBC connection to a WebFOCUS reporting (WRS) server (i.e. a server with a 2xx-xxx-xxxx license key). You can connect to a Full Function (FFS) or Data migrator server (DMS) with ODBC however (i.e. a server with a 1 or 3 as the first character in the license key). To make it more confusing, a FFS can be a WRS, but a WRS cannot be a FFS.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, confirm with CSS in NY that you CAN use ODBC to connect to your WRS before you waste any more time trying.

Thanks, dhagen!

That explains everything.

How you would accomplish what you are trying to do would require an iWay Adapter for the RDBMS you are trying to access say Oracle, IMS, DB2, SQL Server etc. Then you would use a ODBC Connector to talk to the iWay Adapter. This would allow any program that can use odbc to connect to the iWay Adapter and then the iWay Adapter would make the call to the RDBMS.

Hopt this helps.
