Hi all,

had a search & couldnt find quite what I was looking for.

We are currently in the process of requesting new machines for our department. As witha lot of companies, our security dept would like to impose restricted admin rights on our machines. (always been unrestricted on our current machines).

To justify having our new machines unrestricted we have to provide them with a valid reason. Can anyone provide me with some ammunition as to why we require this? or do we not need full admin rights (sorry - not that technical when it comes to rights etc)

Are you talking about Developer Studio or the WebFOCUS client and server pieces? You do not need admin rights for Developer Studio. It is helpful, however, for the installation of client and server.

I suppose Im talking about the whole lot. We use dev studio & have local installs of the server etc (the local installs are used more for personal development of methods usually found here). Also have SQL sefrver installed for accessing & creating external databases.

Im really hoping I can come up with a sufficient arguement to justify them being unlocked.

For local installs, which I have, you don't need admin rights. Sorry.

If you are talking about admin rights on your desktop computer, security departments use them to prevent installing unlicensed software or downloading and installing software that may contain a virus. If this is the case, someone with admin rights will have to do the install and set up DEV STUDIO. You may not need admin rights to your own computer.

If you are talking about admin rights to WebFocus (MRE) not everyone needs them or should have them.

As a caveat to what Pat said, I don't recommend installing Dev Studio as an admin. It needs to be installed as the person who is going to use it. We have not had good success installing Dev Studio under a different id than the person who is actually going to log on and use it.

That's interesting. Back a version or two (5.3 I think) we had the same issue because our desktops were locked down much the same way. Our helpdesk would log in as admin to install DevStudio, and we never had any problems as the local user.

After doing this over and over (and over) the Help Desk finally decided that users in the IT department were a little computer savvy and could handle their own PC's by themselves so they gave us all admin rights to our own computers. We have policies in place as to proper use (and abuse) for installations, downloads, and virus prevention and we, who should know better than any, get nailed when there is a problem.

well ive stuck the request in & lined it up more along the linse of the local web & sql server. hopefully it will do the trick.

The policies have only recently been brought in at our place & ween have resisted upgrading our machines as they also lock them down. we now have it signed off that we can have unlocked machines....just one final hurdle to go.
