Just to share an something that I found with TX format where Total and Sub-Total are not performed properly when a TX format is used.
I can't tell if this is a known issue, a new one or a normal behavior because actually I can't login to TechSupport.
Run below sample twice and compare. First as is. Second with the MDL field displaying (remove "-*").
DEFINE FILE CAR
MDL /TX6 = MODEL;
END
TABLE FILE CAR
SUM MODEL
-* MDL
RETAIL_COST
BY COUNTRY
BY CAR
ON COUNTRY SUBTOTAL AS 'Sub-Total'
ON TABLE COLUMN-TOTAL AS 'Grand-Total'
ON TABLE SET PAGE-NUM NOLEAD
END
With the second run result, you will see that each Sub-Total are 0 EXCEPT for England (at 5,100 instead of 45,319) and Grand-Total is 5,100 when it's supposed to be 173,204.
Reason of this : Total and Sub-Total only consider rows where the MDL field is displayed on no more than ONE row. Which is only "ENGLAND/TRIUMPH/TR7" row. In other words : if your TX field display its content in multiple rows, your Total and Sub-Total will be wrong.

The case is not to sum a string but the TX format cannot be used as a BY, so you don't have choice to put it in the PRINT/SUM section if you want it to be displayed. And if you have numeric value that you want to display with total, there is not a lot of choices...
Even with Multi-verb, the same issue occurs.
DEFINE FILE CAR
MDL /TX6 = MODEL;
END
TABLE FILE CAR
SUM RETAIL_COST
BY COUNTRY
BY CAR
ON COUNTRY SUBTOTAL AS 'Sub-Total'
PRINT MODEL
MDL
BY COUNTRY
BY CAR
ON TABLE COLUMN-TOTAL AS 'Grand-Total'
ON TABLE SET PAGE-NUM NOLEAD
END
