John: If you mean XFOCUS as a FILETYPE in a MFD vs. FOCUS, the savings are realized in I/O performance. With type FOCUS, the page size is 4096K. With XFOCUS it is 8,192K, so essentially you’re reading in larger blocks/pages during file I/O. Programs should not need changing. REBUILD of the file is best method. Not sure what the cost would be going from mainframe to WebFOCUS 7.1. I hope this helps.

Just a hunch John, but I believe most of the members on these forums are the programming types that seldom get involved at the management level cost decisions. You will find technical answers here regarding the upgrade, but I suggest you contact IBI directly for the cost part. Those fees would all depend on your current licensing structure and where you want to go.
Goooooooooood luck on the upgrade though. Sandeep M.

john, XFOCUS is a filetype, a type of focus database that uses multidimensional indices. When you say 'focus 7 to web', i'm guessing you're on some mainframe config and you want to go to web...theres a very cool document guiding you thru that process. here Once you go to webfocus, you don't have to use XFOCUS databases ,you can still use FOCUS databases, you can move gradually to XFOCUS when you see how wicked cool they are. As for costs, if any, as our colleagues here have said, its between you and your sales reps;

The main reason for the upgrading is due the size constraints that we are facing, We have already crossed the 2GB limit or 1400 cylinder in mainframe. We are also looking to move the system online so that report can be generated direclty by user without any coding as in earlier version. We are using Focus 7.1.1 now in mainframe.
Please give your advice(solution) on the above situation that i am facing.
Whether relational or hierarchical, or a combination, I'd take a fresh look at the the database design to see where space can be reduced. And, I'd be looking for logical breaks in the data by some high level qualifier fields or by time (monthly, quarterly etc.) to take advantage of physical partioning and the USE command.

There are two different solutions regarding your database size constrain. One is to use XFOCUS database; and another is to use LOCATION attributes at segment level if you have multi segment databases. LOCATION attributes will allow you to store data from one logical database into a few physical databases.

regarding the cost, I've got no idea. When it comes to changes, as far as we've seen, there are no changes needed when going from Focus db to Xfocus. The only change you have to do is the suffix attribute in the master. The simplest way to convert is running a REBUILD.
cherian the coolest thing about xfocus db's is that the focsort file isn't limited to 2 gig either. so its very cool, out of the box, even if you don't take full advantage of the mulit-dim indices right away. I second what Stockholm says. The situation you describe sounds like a perfect one for webfocus ; do you have a local IBI rep?

From what I understand, the 2GB limit was resolved in 7.1.6 --
