I have created a HOLD file of some data that I want to use in the Report Painter to create a report.

[
FILEDEF TF_ANE DISK \\CLEVELANDPOINT\IBI\APPS\CIMDATA\TF_ANE.FTM
-RUN
-*
TABLE FILE CP_ANE
PRINT *
ON TABLE HOLD AS TF_ANE FORMAT ALPHA
END
-RUN
-*
-*
? HOLD TF_ANE
-RUN

0DEFINITION OF HOLD FILE: TF_ANE
0FIELDNAME ALIAS FORMAT
GROUP E01 A10
INDICATOR E02 A10V
IDESCRIPTION E03 A50V MISSING = ON
ISHORT E04 A20V MISSING = ON
ISOURCE E05 A20V MISSING = ON
IALTDESC1 E06 A50V MISSING = ON
IALTDESC2 E07 A50V MISSING = ON
IALTDESC3 E08 A50V MISSING = ON
IALTDESC4 E09 A20 MISSING = ON
IGROUP E10 A30V MISSING = ON
]

I have coded a permanent master file so I can go against it with the
Painter as I style this report.

[
FILENAME=TF_ANE ,SUFFIX=FIX, $
SEGMENT=TF_ANE, SEGTYPE=S0,$
FIELDNAME=GROUP , ALIAS=E01 ,USAGE=A10 ,ACTUAL=A10,$
FIELDNAME=INDICATOR ,ALIAS=E02 ,USAGE=A10V ,ACTUAL=A10,$
FIELDNAME= IDESCRIPTION,ALIAS=E03 ,USAGE=A50V ,ACTUAL=A50,MISSING=ON,$
FIELDNAME=ISHORT ,ALIAS=E04 ,USAGE=A20V ,ACTUAL=A20,MISSING=ON,$
FIELDNAME=ISOURCE ,ALIAS=E05 ,USAGE=A20V ,ACTUAL=A20,MISSING=ON,$
FIELDNAME=IALTDESC1 ,ALIAS=E06 ,USAGE=A50V ,ACTUAL=A50,MISSING=ON,$
FIELDNAME=IALTDESC2 ,ALIAS=E07 ,USAGE=A50V ,ACTUAL=A50,MISSING=ON,$
FIELDNAME=IALTDESC3 ,ALIAS=E08 ,USAGE=A50V ,ACTUAL=A50,MISSING=ON,$
FIELDNAME=IALTDESC4 ,ALIAS=E09 ,USAGE=A20 ,ACTUAL=A20,MISSING=ON,$
FIELDNAME=IGROUP ,ALIAS= E10,USAGE=A30V ,ACTUAL=A30,MISSING=ON,$
]

I have not coded a master file in years, and I am not sure how to treat the A20V, A30V, A50V,
fields in the actual or usage statement. Can anyone offer some advise.

Thanks! Roll Eyes

If I look at a master file that gets created doing a hold for fields that have a AxxV format, then I see for USAGE the AxxV and for ACTUAL I see AxxW.

Maybe this works for you?

Tom,

You could just code this to have your data file and the master file in your cimdata folder -
APP HOLD CIMDATA
-*
TABLE FILE CP_ANE
PRINT *
ON TABLE HOLD AS TF_ANE FORMAT ALPHA
END
-RUN

That way, if the contents of CP_ANE changes overtime you'll not have to update your master file (especially as you are using PRINT *).

Tom,

If you use the painter to create you HOLD file then when you build your secnod report, you will see the master of your HOLD file in the window where you choose your files.

The issue with AnV is when is it held, it stores a 2 byte integer (HOLD FORMAT INTERNAL) or 4 char integer (HOLD FORMAT ALPHA) prior to the field that holds its length.
