Sadly all of the links provided by Kerry in that old post are now broken.
There is only one PDF document from 1998 with some instructions as to how to achieve this but it relies on other technology (at least based on what I could infer at a quick glance) and not really on the usage of a bar code font one could embed in PDF which is what I think was the approach to take in this case ... no?
We use the same font files on Unix and Windows servers for our bar codes. The hard part (for us) was buying the files in the first place from an additional vendor (due to our company's procedures to approve a new vendor).
