We have a db2 udb database running on an iSeries. We have heard that running the DB2 Connect client will make our webfocus run faster.

I've been working with databases for years, and I've got the query times on the database side down to the 100 ms range for our dashboard, but it can still take 30 seconds to render the dashboard in some cases, and always takes at least 15 seconds. Our IBI consultant claims that we need to install db2 connect to get a faster dashboard product.

We called IBM rochester about this, and they have informed us that there is indeed no other way to connect to a database from a PC outside of ODBC, and even the operations navigator uses an ODBC connection.

DB2 connect will cost us about 40k.... and it's worth it if we get a dashboard that runs as fast as the demonstration dashboards do. Does anyone here run db2 connect? Does anyone not run db2 connect, but have a fast dashboard running from an iSeries database?

Via ODBC you get a generic connect to DB2 as opposed to DB2 Connect which utilizes DB2's native client. You really can't compare the 2.

When you run the procedure is your AS400 taking a huge performance hit, meaning can it handle the load. If that is where the hit is occuring, you may want to see if by disabling optimization, even though more records come back to the Windows box, your windows box may actually have more horse power to crunch the numbers.

how does one disable optimization?

I think you need to eliminate any wf overhead to establish whether you need db2 connect (is this the same as the DB2 adapter - as opposed to you currently using ODBC driver for db2 and then using ODBC adapter in wf).

Try a long running query that RETURNS A SINGLE RECORD (eg join + sum ) and run it on both wf and directly on a SPUFI screen (is there still such a thing?) on the AS/400.

This will give you a true idea of the relative performance since there will always be a bigger wf overhead for multi record queries.

I'm surprised that IBI have recommended using a Windows server as your report server when you could have a ISeries(AS/400) based reporting server.

They recommended us to use a Reporting server installed on the ISeries that hosts the databases.
It uses SQL CLI and is much faster than an external Webfocus Reporting Server.

But for your architecture, I strongly recommend you try DB2 Connect. It uses DRDA as "Standard" connection so it will be using SQL CLI as well. This means that your Windows machine will treat the request as if the database was local.

But I am curious about your configuration. What kind of hardware are you using, and for how many users?
