From: Craig Rhombs (software project manager at the Minnesota Department of Education) Question:
We are seeking advice on how best to use WebFocus with MS SQL SERVER Analysis Services “cubes”. Details:
WebFocus 7.6.10
SQL Server 2005 / Analysis Services 2005
We have built cubes from our data warehouse for some time now, but only recently have we made a serious attempt to point WebFocus at one. Attaching to them with MS Excel 2007 is easy and effective, but we would like to explore what WebFocus might bring to the table. We appear to succeed in creation of master file information, however, when we create a report inside a procedure, no dimensional data is returned from the server. That is, in the report painter object inspector pane, we see the expected measures (facts) and we see the names of the expected dimensions, but no dimensional attributes are shown. We only see a “hierarchies” folder with no contents. Measures can successfully be dragged and dropped, but dimensions cannot. There is an attached picture that shows an example of the situation.
Now, we suspect that we are missing something regarding hierarchies. Our cubes are built without them since they seem inappropriate to our situation and we have never been driven in that direction in prior analysis efforts using Excel. Most of our dimensions are just not hierarchical in nature.
If someone has experienced this situation and can offer suggestions, we would appreciate it.
