I have the following problem with the Report Painter. My report output is PDF and if I use the text mode to set some width of the columns it is ok. When the values for the columns are set and I open the report painter it changes my widths. Do you know why and how I can avoid it?
I experience the same behaviour now and then. I have no clue as to why it does that, and there does not seem to be any reason to change the values, but still it does change them. Not always, but sometimes. And the values are only slightly changed, just as if some rounding or recalculation is taking place.
The only way to avoid this behaviour (at least that's my experience) is to refrain from using the Report Painter with reports that are really demanding in the exact values of the column widths.

I've found using painter to get your initial layout is fine, but once you start 'messing around in text mode', it is best to stay in text mode. It's as if whoever wrote the code behind the painter doesn't like how you're doing things, even though it is perfectly legal syntax.

With the GUI think "Grid On" and "Snap to Grid" to see if you understand why your precise figures may change?
I'm guessing that the main reason for the reformat (and consequent messing) of the code is due to the fact that, within a GUI, you have to be able to interpret the code that is being written to ensure that it is syntactically correct etc. To try and cope with the myriad of formatting or styles which can be used, you have to be able to decypher what is there. Once you've proved that the code is correct and valid, you may then write it back out in a known format or style so that reading it again is not too onerous?
One of the many reasons that I steer clear of the GUI unless I am learning new features etc.
