Subhead Behavior

I need some help with subhead formatting. I am running a report that is set to 57 lines, so on the 58th line page numbering should increment and display on page 2 or whatever the next page is. In some cases that expected behavior does not occur.
The reason is because on my subhead I am forcing it to skip a line. ON BYFIELD1 SUBHEAD "

Since you have set your lines to 57, I will assume this is a printed output. For PDF or Postscript output you can use ON BYFIELD1 NOSPLIT. For other printed output formats I would still give this a try.

You may also want to try SET PRINTPLUS=ON before the fex. Fixes a lot of problems with WF incorrectly calculating the length of pages for PDF output.

The only format I can use is WP, because that is the only format that is accepted by the printer (auto feed printer). If the printer was capable I would use PS.
When I try your suggestions the behavior acts different than before, but still not correct. Since the BYFIELD1 occurs on the 57th line now it moves the BYFIELD1 to page 2, but the page 2 label is displayed on line 56 (on the first page). If it makes any difference I am on Ver 7.1.3.

I'm taking a guess and would suggest you add the NOSPLIT option to your sort field

Here's a couple of things to try:

Play with the LINES, PAGE-SIZE, or RPAGESET settings. This may get you what you need.

Try including ON BYFIELD1 NOSPLIT as Greg suggests

Try setting PAGE-NUM to NOLEAD.

Having to use the WP format limits your options, but there is still probably a way to get what you need.

So far I have applied everyone's suggestions. Thank you for all of your help so far, but I still have issues. It seems like no matter what technique I use, if the BYFIELD1 is on the 57th line it will affect the line behavior. Is there a way to create a conditional subhead that says if BYFIELD1 is on line 57 then ignore the

Skyler: Another strategy is to compute a line counter that is hidden (noprint). Then have a style statement such as:
TYPE=SUBHEAD,
BY=BYFIELD1,
WHEN=LINE_CNTR LT 57,
$
This will execute your ON BYFIELD1 SUBHEAD as long as the line_cntr is less than 57. If it equals 57 the subhead will be ignored.
