[SHARING] planning MRE
We are going to start building our MRE and dashboard. We have nothing set up yet in WebFOCUS other than the masters IBI set up during installation. We are new to WebFOCUS and took a few classes.

1. What are the considerations for planning MRE? We can create user accounts, domains, etc., but don't know how the WebFOCUS Environment application folders are connected to MRE.

2. What are the best-practices for laying the foundation to build MRE?

3. Do we do development in Environment application folders and then copy the focexecs to MRE domains?

4. What do we do if more than one domain needs to use the same master or masters?

5. How do we learn how to do this initial planning? Are there any resources or written documents?

6. We want to lay the good foundation that will last over time, but don't know what's the best approach, and are new to WebFOCUS.

Appreciatively,

Krishna

Krishna,

We used DS to write all of the reports. We then created new reports that just had "includes" in MRE that pointed back to the DS area.

We are definetly not technical and that was our best approach since it was something we could do in the Finance group.

Krishna,

Building out MRE, creating your Domain Structure, Groups, Users and Roles is something you'll probably want to get some help with. I would talk to the local IBI office and purchase a few days of consulting and have them walk you through these foundational descisions.

Don,

IBI consulting time is not in the budget. Which is why I posted this question here. Can you offer some insights to these questions?

Thank you,

Krishna

Hi,

In our environment the app files hold the masters. The MRE Domain is then assigned the app path that contains the masters for that domain. Development is done using developer studio in the domain where the report will resides. We have a dev, test and prod environments when the code is ready for QA testing we use the MRE change management utility to move the code to test and eventually to production.

I think it depends on the version of webfocus you are planning for on the creation of domains as webfocus 8 handles a little differently then 7.6 & 7.7.

Reading the MRE administration manuals helps a little. After that the way security is implemented in 7.6.11 and who you want to see what also leads to how many domains you may want to have. And multiple domains can use the same sets of masters just have them pointing to the same app path.

In Each Domain properties there is an option to select the APP folder that contains your master files. If you don't select any APP folder for a given domain then by default it will list all the master files from all APP folders that are defined in the APP path.

2. What are the best-practices for laying the foundation to build MRE?

It may depend on your architecture but refer to the various manuals available for each level.

3. Do we do development in Environment application folders and then copy the focexecs to MRE domains?

You can directly do your development in MRE, there is no need to develop in APP and then copy them to MRE. Master files can not be created in MRE.

4. What do we do if more than one domain needs to use the same master or masters?

Unless you select a APP folder for each domain you can see all master files as I mentioned above.

5. How do we learn how to do this initial planning? Are there any resources or written documents?

There are several documents available at techsupport.informationbuilders.com
