I've got a file that contains a handful of records with a variety of unprintable characters in a field. I'd like to map these unprintable characters to blank for a report I am writing. I suppose I could use CTRAN for each type of unprintable character in a DEFINE, but I'm wondering if anyone has a nicer more elegant solution. -James

Nothing that I am aware. do the unprintable characters cause issues with printing? When you say 'unprintable' are they also ones that don't display well either? CTRAN is the only thing I know of, unless you wanted to step through each character and have a decode file.

Couple of questions: (1) Does this field contain both printable characters you want to keep and the unprintable ones you want to convert to blanks, or is it all one way or the other? (2) How long is this field?

i use CTRAN, jb, and i have had to copy and paste the 'unprintable' (which usually shows up as a goofy box) into a BYTVAL function i order to figure out what value to translate to a 32. You could try the BITVAL as well, directly on the character in question, if copypaste isn't an option for you. CTRAN works fine for me.
