When excel is running in the plug in and I launch ordinary excel or vice versa I sometimes experience unpredictable behaviour such as the screen freezing.

Sometimes this is because a user needs to answer a prompt and if you alt-tab you eventually get to it.

Does anybody have a policy that cures this (other than advising users to use one at a time)?

Does setting excel with /e (existing) or /n (new window launch) resolve any of this.

Does applying later servicepacks of excel (we are on 2003) fix things?

Something that may be of use.

If you kill excel via task manager you kill the plug ins too. So the plug in is not a separate program but uses excel.

The 'plug in' is just excel running in the browser.

Within IE a plug in application is defined to be triggered for certain mime types in the HTML message the browser receives.

Similarly PDF is a plug in.

hammo1j,
We have experieced some issues when using Excel Templates. When the Excel template file is opened from WebFOCUS and the users Excel 2003 is not at the Service Pack 3 level, there were errors and strange behavior.

We have also instructed our users to not use the Excel browser plug-in but use 'real' Excel. This can be accomplished in Windows Explorer, select Tools, Folder Opetions, File Types. FInd XLS click the Advanced button and de-select "Browse in Same window". This forces Excel to open.

Hope this helps.

We have also found that Excel 2003 and Excel 2007 have different behaviors under Vista. More salt into the wound!

A message from the darks side, there is!

Thanks Nick

Using excel 2003 SP3 cures a host of problems. I would suggest IBI officially lists this as a requirement as the behaviour generally gets blamed on webfocus rather than excel.

Regards

John
